High Adventure
Approximate Ages 15-17
High Adventure is an exhilarating and inspiring program that places young adults in the wilderness for the entire four-week session. After a night spent at our main facility north of Steamboat Springs, campers head out for a five-day road trip around Colorado. Adventures during the first week include river rafting, rock climbing and spelunking (caving!).
From there it is on to the trail for the first week out. Campers will learn how to navigate the woods with a map and compass, how to pack their backpack, how to set up shelter and how cook delicious meals in the backcountry.
After each week, groups are resupplied with fresh food, mail from home and gear for the week’s activities. During the third week, campers will prepare for the Tyrolean Traverse and their 48hour solo experience. For the Tyrolean, campers who choose to participate are suspended from two ropes over the Gold Creek waterfall, where they will enjoy the 360-degree view. Next, it is time to prepare for the two night solos where campers have a chance to reflect on their experience so far. After being picked up and debriefing solos, the group prepares for the final week, Mountain Crossing.
After the last resupply, campers will return to the trail and the counselors follow a few miles behind. This is the week where campers work as a group with the skills they have mastered and hike into base camp a week later. They return to camp as everyone is ready to celebrate their accomplishment. This is a remarkable journey for teens as they grow as individuals and as a group creating everlasting friendships.
High Adventure counselors are skilled wilderness instructors who emphasize safety at all times, and are passionate about passing on their knowledge of the outdoors. Groups include 2-3 counselors and 5-9 campers.
